Considerations for Tailings Dam Monitoring
Reducing the impact and risks of tailings dam failures is a concern for both mining companies and communities around the world. Significant tragedies in recent years have increased the priority and urgency to comprehensively manage these challenges.
The monitoring aspect of tailings dams is an important component of a complete solution for each tailings dam.
As a result, GroundProbe will be hosting an upcoming webinar on the topic of best practices for tailings dam monitoring to mitigate the risk of catastrophic failures.
In this webinar, we will outline a range of different monitoring configurations, based on risk and impact. We will discuss different technologies for surface displacement monitoring, their strengths, limitations, and how they can help controlling tailings dams.
Some real-life examples will be presented in order to help to illustrate what other mining companies are doing with their tailings dams.
Other Topics Covered During the Session:
• Examples for monitoring dams in construction, active, inactive, and in an emergency
• Radar technologies: InSAR, SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) and RAR (Real Aperture Radar)
• How to “set and forget”
• Dashboard your data
• New products released for tailings dams
• How to review and report on your data
About the Presenter:
Albert Cabrejo is a Civil Engineer, with postgraduate studies in Geotechnical Engineering and over 20 years of experience working for the geotechnical industry. He has supported the expansion of radar technology worldwide for open pits, and more recently new technologies for rapid failure detection, tailings dams surface monitoring, underground convergence and construction monitoring, and R&D of new software and products. In previous years he spent about 10 years in consulting, and 5 years in geotechnical construction projects for the civil industry.
Albert is currently Group Geotechnical Consulting Specialist for GroundProbe.
