Meet Rebekah Brown, SHES Specialist, Australia
As part of our International Women’s Day series, Rebekah Brown hosted a fun and uplifting Q&A to share her journey, career insights, and what the day means to her.
How long have you been at GroundProbe?
I’ve just celebrated 1 year now in March.
Why did you join us?
I felt it was time for a change after my previous role working on-site in a construction environment. The work was intense and demanded a significant amount of both physical and mental energy, leaving me with little time or capacity for a proper work-life balance. The long hours and high demands were taking a toll, and I realized I needed a healthier balance between my professional and personal life. This led me to seek new opportunities where I could apply my skills in a more sustainable and fulfilling way, with a focus on both personal well-being and professional growth.
What has been a highlight so far?
One of the most rewarding aspects of this new role has been the sense of being truly heard. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my opinions are not only listened to but also valued and genuinely expected. In my previous experiences, feeling like I had a voice was sometimes a challenge, but here, my input is actively encouraged and considered. Additionally, joining such a wonderful team has been a highlight. From the moment I arrived, everyone was kind, supportive, and welcoming. This positive team dynamic has made the transition seamless and has fostered an environment where collaboration and mutual respect thrive.
What do you like most about working here?
I really enjoy the dynamic collaboration with colleagues from various departments. It brings fresh perspectives to every project, making each day engaging and unique. Working alongside individuals with diverse expertise and ideas challenges me to step beyond my usual scope, encouraging innovative problem-solving. This cross-functional teamwork not only deepens my understanding of the business but also drives my continuous professional and personal growth as I learn from the varied experiences and skills of my teammates.
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
For me, International Women’s Day is not just a time to celebrate the remarkable achievements of women but also an opportunity to reflect on the challenges and obstacles they have overcome to reach where they are today. It’s a day to recognise the resilience, determination, and strength that women consistently demonstrate in the face of adversity. Despite the barriers often placed in their way, women continue to rise and excel, proving that when given the same opportunities as men, they have the ability not only to succeed but to truly thrive. This day serves as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to achieve equality and the importance of supporting women in all areas of life.”
What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received and who gave it to you?
The best career advice I ever received came from my dad, and it’s something that has stuck with me throughout my life. He told me that the only real limitation to my potential is myself—if I truly want something, I have the ability to achieve it. His words reminded me that our mindset and determination shape the outcomes we experience. He also emphasized the importance of self-reliance, advising me never to depend on others to navigate life’s challenges. Life is full of highs and lows, and while circumstances may change, the one constant is yourself. He encouraged me to take ownership of my journey, make the necessary decisions, and push forward no matter what. This advice taught me to trust in my abilities and stay focused on my goals, regardless of external obstacles or setbacks.
Best tip for someone starting a new job?
My advice is to stay open-minded and never hesitate to ask questions. When joining a new organisation, there’s no manual that outlines every detail of how to navigate it, especially when it comes to understanding its culture, processes, and unique nuances. The best way to learn is through curiosity—asking questions is key to gaining clarity and developing a deeper understanding. Embrace every opportunity to learn, whether from colleagues, team leaders, or hands-on experience. The more you ask, the more you’ll grow, helping you integrate faster while staying aligned with the company’s values and goals. Don’t be afraid to seek help—being willing to ask questions will ultimately drive your success and growth within the organisation.
