Inspiring Creative Young Scientists in Regional Queensland
GroundProbe, Orica, and Wonder of Science (WoS) have again united to promote STEM education in regional Queensland, Australia.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a WoS regional conference in Emerald and witness the enthusiasm of young scientists, leaving me inspired by the impact of this partnership.
What is WoS and its focus?
Wonder of Science has championed STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education in schools and communities for over 12 years. With the help of Young Science Ambassadors (YSAs) – PhD researchers from leading Queensland universities – WoS aims to spark, inspire and engage future interest in STEM.
What happens at a WoS regional conference?
Last week, at the Emerald Regional Conference, I observed 60 students from four schools showcase their science projects. These students ranged from years 4 to 9 and gave group-based presentations. The projects covered a wide range of topics, such as sustainable living, energy transformations, and temperature control for ice cream. This forum provided a unique platform for students to share their work, learn from others, meet inspirational YSAs, and further fuel their passion for STEM.
What is GroundProbe’s involvement?
GroundProbe has played a crucial role in this partnership by facilitating a substantial grant of $300,000 from the Orica Impact Fund. The grant supports STEM education in the Bowen Basin, Mount Isa, and Gladstone regions over three years, 2023 being the second year. David Noon, CEO of GroundProbe, expressed the initiative’s aim to inspire local students and build a strong regional workforce.
As I was last year, I am encouraged by what I experienced from such creative and energy-filled young minds.
Congratulations to all participants, especially the students and teachers from Emerald North State School, Blackwater State School and Dysart State High School. The GroundProbe-Orica-WoS partnership has made a significant impact fostering a love for STEM among young students in regional Queensland. Through initiatives like this, we can continue encouraging the next generation of scientists and innovators in our communities.
