From Home-Grown Start-Up to a Global Innovation Powerhouse and a Trusted Partner of Companies Around the World
2021 sees GroundProbe celebrating 20 years of operation and 20 years of the patented Slope Stability Radar (SSR).
#Didyouknow how it all began?
In 1993 we were simply a group of university friends with creative engineering minds who became involved in an industry-funded PhD project at the University of Queensland.
In 1997, the Australian Coal Association Research Program saw immense value in the PhD project and provided funding to the university. The project saw the team specifically focussing on the real-world application of the university’s radar technology in detecting slope failures in open cut mines that did not require physical access to slope walls and provided real-time monitoring in a broad range of conditions.
In 2001, following the success of the project, the patented Slope Stability Radar (SSR) was commercialised coinciding with the inception of the GroundProbe brand.
Over the 20 years that follows, GroundProbe has grown from a one radar, home-grown start-up to a global innovation powerhouse with a complete suite of hardware, software and services, deployed all around the world.
Today, the company is now part of the Orica Group.
Orica has more than 140 years of experience and investment in innovation and were quick to realise the value that GroundProbe could bring to the company. They are the global leader in mining and civil services, with a diverse workforce of around 12,000 employees, servicing customers across more than 100 countries. And the rest is history.
